The San Francisco Chee Kung Tong stands as one of the oldest Chinese brotherhood institutions in the United States — a living testament to 176 years of unity, heritage, and resilience.
Our story began in 1849, a year etched into the very foundation of Chinese American history. As ships arrived at the Golden Gate carrying immigrants seeking hope, dignity, and opportunity, San Francisco became the birthplace of a new community — one that struggled against hardship, discrimination, and the challenges of survival in a foreign land.
Amid these trials, a group of visionaries and pioneers established the Chee Kung Tong of San Francisco, rooted in the ancient Hung Mun tradition of justice, loyalty, and brotherhood. It was a haven for newcomers who had landed with nothing but their courage and their heritage.
From the beginning, our mission was clear:
-To protect the vulnerable.
-To support the struggling.
-To preserve the culture of our ancestors.
-To build a community where every member felt seen, heard, and defended.
Through the long and turbulent 19th century, the Chee Kung Tong became a sanctuary in Chinatown — standing strong through the Anti-Chinese violence, the Exclusion Era, and the waves of injustice that targeted our community. When others shut their doors, we opened ours. When the world refused to hear our voices, we spoke together.
As generations came and went, the San Francisco branch evolved from a protective brotherhood into a cultural guardian — a center for leadership, unity, and community empowerment. We helped guide workers, families, and small businesses through some of the hardest eras in American history. We brought people together to celebrate festivals, honor our ancestors, and educate the next generation. Our halls became a symbol of dignity and solidarity, standing firm even through earthquakes, fires, political upheavals, and waves of immigration.
Today, 176 years later, the legacy continues.
We remain:
A place where tradition lives, where brotherhood thrives, and where our elders and founders are honored.
Connected to lodges, halls, and allied Tongs across continents, preserving a lineage that stretches across centuries and oceans.
Upholding rituals, festivals, historical practices, and the values of honor, justice, and loyalty that define the Hung Mun system.
Protecting our families, guiding youth, honoring seniors, and standing together through every challenge of modern life.
For 176 years, our San Francisco branch has kept alive a tradition that predates America itself — a sacred heritage passed from master to apprentice, elder to youth, generation to generation.
Becoming a member is easy. Simply sign up and start networking and being a part of our community.

We do not merely exist as an organization.
We exist as a living chapter of Chinese American history, an unbroken chain stretching back to the early days of the Gold Rush.
Every stone in Chinatown, every page of our records, every leader who came before us — they built the foundation we stand on today.
We honor them by continuing the work:
This is the legacy of the San Francisco Chee Kung Tong.
176 years strong.
176 years unbroken.
176 years of honor and brotherhood.
And we will continue — for another century, and the next.
